All Stories pretty much have a conflict in them. Without conflicts books would be boring. In the book Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard there is more than just one conflict there are many. There is a girl that vanished she has not been seen in 3 years and everyone thinks she is dead but maybe she isn't and is just playing a mean trick on her friends and family. This one problem of a girl dieing has turned into more problems with people getting black mailed and innocent people dieing. How did this all happen? No one knows except for the one that is dead.
Imagine being at a funeral of your closest friends that knew all your secrets and than you get a text from the dead girls phone. How do you react to something as freaky as that and the message says: "Don't worry your secrets are safe with me in the grave as long as you listen to what ever I say"

Every time you get a text you have to do something and if you don't every one will know your secret and some can even get hurt from a little text like that.
If I was that person getting messages i would be freaked out knowing that if that person has done something to my friends they can easily do something to me.
Have you ever gotten a message from a blocked number saying that they are watching you but it just ends up being a friend. Well imagine it wasn't your friend and it was actually a really person that was trying to hurt you. I would be terrified. So now imagine how the girls in the book feel.
